Ryan

“HOPE offers more than I imagined”

Like other Hopesters, HOPE gave Ryan more than he had originally imagined. “When I first heard about HOPE, I thought it would be a great opportunity to spend a few hours each week interacting with children with special needs and helping The Children’s Center for the Physically Disabled,” says Ryan, “but I found that HOPE offers much more than this.”

Ryan was partnered with Billy, a bright 6 year-old boy who has delayed cognitive development. Although Billy is unable to speak, Ryan notes that he “didn’t need to because our words consisted of smiles, laughs, and hugs.” Ryan primarily worked with Billy on developing his physical and verbal abilities, but ultimately, being a caring friend was all that was needed to accomplish that task: “Everyday when I walked into the classroom and saw my buddy, Billy, finishing up his afternoon nap, I couldn’t wait for his eyes to open as he let out a big yawn and slowly moved his head in my direction. His face would explode with excitement, and I was always astonished that a child so small could have such a big smile.”

Although HOPE is a relatively big commitment with weekly visits, Ryan eagerly returned week in and out. Ryan states that, “Every day I visited, Billy’s giggles and endless amounts of energy reminded me why I come each week.” Not only did Ryan laugh and play with other kids at his HOPE partner school, but he also formed an incredible bond with wonderful children, full of life and optimism, and found himself truly inspired by their positive attitudes. “Billy could throw a ball for hours,” remarks Ryan, “and his endurance often outlasted mine. We would run around the playground together, throwing balls and riding scooters, neither of us realizing the therapeutic benefit this FUN was having for him.”

Indeed, as Ryan puts it “That is why HOPE is such a great organization. You can have such an enormous impact on these children with special needs, without even knowing it! By just giving them attention and opening your hearts, you become a role model and friend to a very special child. I encourage everyone to try out HOPE and see for themselves how rewarding it is to help children overcome physical expectations.”
